Congrats to Benne!

Congratulations to Benne of the Westwego Police Department, featured in the latest issue of K-9 Cop Magazine!

Benne’s Story

Benne, a 6 year old German Shepherd and veteran of the police force, was retired in 2011 after suffering a career-ending injury. After being transferred from his previous handler to a different owner, Benne was picked up as a stray by the LASPCA in 2013. At that point, Benne’s care was taken over by Toby Burroughs with New Orleans German Shepherd Rescue (NOGSR). Under the care of NOGSR and a team of veterinarians from Lakeview Veterinary Hospital, MedVet New Orleans, and Gulf South Veterinary Dentistry & Oral Surgery, Benne underwent multiple surgeries to get back into good health. Toby connected with an experienced K-9 officer with the Westwego Police Deparment and found a home for Benne where he could still use his skills, and now he is featured in this month’s K-9 Cop Magazine! For more information on Benne’s story or to help donate to his medical fund, visit
