Louisiana Leads the Country In Heartworm Disease

Missed doses of preventative – a leading reason for increase

In our part of the country, mosquitoes and the potential heartworms they carry are a year-round problem. Along with Mississippi, Louisiana leads the country in heartworm infection rates according to the American Heartworm Society’s 2019 report.

In fact, the whole southeastern United States is a heartworm hub—and thanks to our warm, humid climate, there’s no downtime.  As you may already know, heartworms are spread by mosquitoes, and it only takes one bite to infect a pet with this potentially deadly disease.

Sadly, many animals don’t show symptoms until the infection is advanced. While there is treatment for dogs, it can be expensive and very hard on your pet.

Living in this region of the country it is essential that your pet be on heartworm preventative at all times. Missing doses is dangerous, as it is an opportunity for your pet to become infected. 26% of vets around the country saw an increase in heartworm cases last year, and one of the leading factors was the failure of pet owners to administer on-time, year-round heartworm prevention.

That’s why we now carry and highly recommend ProHeart 12 injections to protect your pet against this deadly disease. No more having to remember the monthly dose—with one injection, your pet is protected for an entire year! This medication is very safe, and as a bonus it also guards against hookworms.

Remember—protection is the only way to prevent heartworm disease in pets and is significantly less expensive than treatment. If you have questions about heartworm prevention or want to schedule an appointment for your pet for the ProHeart 12 injection, please give us a call at (504) 482-2173.
